Why Separating Waste?

Separating waste saves raw materials

Most of our raw materials are limited and substitutes can hardly be found. It's only a matter of time until important resources will run short. Recycling aims to regain raw materials from waste, but it only works if waste materials are collected separately.

Waste separation saves energy and benefits our climate

The primary production of many materials needs a lot of energy. Moreover, production processes are quite often very dangerous for man and the environment (e.g. through toxic by-products). Re-melting of aluminium for example affords only 5% of the energy used for primary production! Furthermore, gaining aluminium from ore is quite risky, as proved by the accident at a Hungarian aluminium plant 2010. Another example: In 2011, 615,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent were saved through the collection of waste wrapping materials. That makes 7% of the annual emissions of all the registered cars in Austria.

Separating saves money

Today, many separately collected waste materials can be sold profitable on the global market. These profits co-finance our public waste management, the waste collection charges and the comfortable province-wide network of waste material collection centres. On the contrary, the costs of incineration are very high.
