Consume responsibly - Avoid residual waste
The study “food in residual waste“ carried out by the waste management institute of BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna) shows the need for action in Upper Austria. Every household in Upper Austria disposes of food and leftovers in the amount of 277 euros on average every year! These are 40 kg per household and year.
This poses a problem for several reasons:
- It leads to a higher amount of residual waste
- Large amount of renewable and non renewable resources are used for the production and transportation of food.
- The transportation of food produces a high amount of greenhouse gas.
The measures to combat food in residual waste do not start with waste itself but on the other end you can consider a lot to avoid residual waste already when buying food.
Everyone of us can contribute to reducinge food in residual waste
